Attabad Resort

“No house should ever be on a hill or on anything. It should be of the hill. Belonging to it. Hill and house should live together each the happier for each other” - Frank Lloyd Wright

In the Gojal valley flanked by the Karakoram Range, lies the unsuspecting side effect of a natural disaster; Attabad Lake. The eathquake of 2010 resulted in a landslide which in turn caused an obstruction in the flow of Hunza river, thereby creating this shimmering lake.

Historic villages are still intact, mostly including ‘core’ cluster housing with associated animal byres, stores, simple shops and mosques and other religious buildings. Up in the remoter side and high altitude valleys and summer pastures, individual farms and small clusters of houses tend to cling to the most precarious mountainsides. Geometry that is uncomplicated, paired with soft and warm earth tones paired with a muted geometry, the spaces are envisioned as strikingly contrasted yet welcoming.

Designed in collaboration with Studio Subtractive, our proposal aims to reinterpret these same indigenous building methods in a manner that is at once a celebration of tradition and innovation.

The idea is to seamlessly blend in to our surroundings while standing out. An honest, simple and modern space that is not over-designed. The ambiance looks to invite the outdoors in with strategic openings that create vistas offering perspectives of the scenic outdoors.
